Our Story
Sheeran by Lowden began with a shared belief between Ed Sheeran and George Lowden: that beautifully crafted, inspiring acoustic guitars should be accessible to more players. Hand-built in Northern Ireland, each model carries the signature Lowden feel and tone that first connected Ed to the brand - refined through collaboration, experience, and years of playing on stages around the world.
History of Lowden
As an instrument is deeply personal to both player and maker, a guitar has a unique way of bringing the two together.
For over four decades, George Lowden has built guitars guided by close relationships with the musicians who play them. Remaining a small, family-run workshop has allowed George to listen carefully to player feedback, continuously refining his designs in pursuit of tone, balance, and feel.
This commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and personal connection has shaped the unmistakable sound and character that define Lowden guitars today.
Where it Began
When Ed Sheeran told Gary Lightbody, frontman of Snow Patrol, that he wanted a Lowden guitar, Gary gifted him his own original Lowden - an authentic Bushmills® from 2012.
Ed went on to write five songs for his number one album X (Multiply) on that guitar. Wanting to mark the moment, Gary asked George to create a small-bodied guitar as a gift for Ed. The result was a compact, uniquely proportioned instrument that would later inspire an entirely new model: The Wee Lowden.
From this moment, a friendship formed - rooted in music, craftsmanship, and a shared vision.
Crafted by George. Played by Ed.
George Lowden began building guitars at the age of ten, creating his first instrument by hand when he couldn’t afford to buy one. From the beginning, he chose not to copy existing designs, instead pioneering his own curvaceous soundbox shapes, innovative internal bracing, and natural satin finishes.
Ed Sheeran has been a long-time admirer of Lowden guitars, valuing their ability to perform equally well in the studio and on stage. Together, Ed and George share a belief that young, aspiring musicians should have access to a truly inspiring instrument - one that encourages creativity, progress, and expression.
Sheeran by Lowden represents the next step in this journey: guitars built with care, experience, and purpose - made to be played.
